Oakland's sideshow reports hit an 11-month high in August

Oakland's 311 file logged 59 sideshow reports in August. That is the highest month in a year and nearly five times July's 12. The city built this category on purpose, and it says the requests help choose which corners get enforcement. The last week of August was the loudest stretch.

Thirty-five of the reports landed in the seven days through September 1, against 14 in the full three weeks before. August 31 alone drew 14. The Oakland 311 file shows the pattern of a bad night: the same corners filed more than once, minutes apart.

The load has an address. Twenty-two of the last ten days' 36 requests cluster on one stretch of 38th Avenue around Nevil Street in District 5. 2557 38th Avenue alone drew eight. The file canceled eight of the week's 35 as repeats. Sixteen sat open and eleven were pending when the record was pulled.

The city explains why the category exists on its sideshow prevention page, updated in February: the 311 category tracks requests for prevention measures, and those requests are one of the data points used to choose future pilot locations. OakDOT has installed anti-sideshow treatments at more than a dozen intersections since 2021, from 35th and MacArthur to 64th and Camden, finished in February.

August is not a surprise month in this file. August 2025 ran 57, and September 2025 stayed high at 42. Late summer is when the requests fill up. What a request means is narrower than it looks: the category collects prevention asks, not emergency calls. The file describes where neighbors want the city to act, and the city says it uses exactly that list.

If a corner near you becomes a repeat, file it. The request list feeds the pilot queue, and OakDOT and OPD pick the next sites with it in hand. The reports are the map. The 38th and Nevil block just drew a lot of dots on it.
